Gangway Shipping and Logistics Pvt Ltd. has successfully carried out an Emergency medical evacuation of a ship crew of MV. Evelyn Merck at Vizhinjam International Seaport. A crew member of a ship bound for the Suez Canal from Colombo suffered Brain Hemorrhage Artery Aneurysm at sea. The ship was diverted and brought close to the open sea near Vizhinjam. Gangway Shipping and Logistics Pvt Ltd in connection with Vizhinjam Coast Guard rescued the ship’s crew member who was unconscious due to a reduced pulse rate.
Baliola Gilbert (56), a native of the Philippines and a seaman on board the Philippine ship MV. Evelyn Merck, was rescued and taken to the hospital. The ship’s captain, Nicolar Alexandre Lulian, called for the assistance of the Vizhinjam Coast Guard and carried out the rescue operation.
The vessel was then contacted, provided with telemedical assistance and the evacuation of the distressed mariner was planned. Shortly, the Indian Coast Guard, ICGS C-427, set sail from Vizhinjam and after maneuvering the rough seas launched an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) with medical configuration to carry out the mid-sea medical evacuation.
However, the safe recovery of the patient was not possible as he could not be shifted to a suitable spot onboard. Since the ALH could not evacuate the patient, the Coast Guard vessel ICGS C-427 braving the extreme sea conditions approached MV Evelyn Maersk, evacuated the patient and proceeded at maximum speed for Vizhinjam harbour. The rescue operation was carried out in adverse weather conditions. With the help of a crane and a net, he was lifted from the ship to a small Coast Guard vessel.
Post embarkation, the ICG team stabilised the patient enroute to Vizhinjam Harbour with portable oxygen support and medical aid. On arrival at the Vizhinjam harbour, the patient was rushed to NIMS Hospital for further medical management at 12.15 midnight.
